Seattle's original neighborhood: galleries, brick and First Thursdays

Seattle's founders settled here in 1852, and much of the district was rebuilt in brick after the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1970. Today it's known for art galleries, and the First Thursday Art Walk, held on the first Thursday of every month, is free and self-guided.
A few tattoo studios are mixed in among the galleries and bars near Yesler Way and Jackson Street. Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park are just south, so streets, garages and trains fill up on game days. Check the schedule before booking a long session.
Pioneer Square Station serves the 1 and 2 Lines, the First Hill Streetcar ends at Occidental Mall, and the King County Water Taxi to West Seattle leaves from Pier 50 at the foot of Yesler Way. Street parking is paid Monday through Saturday until 6 p.m. On Sundays parking is free, but a two-hour limit is enforced from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On First Thursdays, the Alliance for Pioneer Square offers free evening garage parking with a voucher.

Sunday street parking is free, but unlike most of Seattle, Pioneer Square enforces a two-hour limit from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., so a long session can still earn a ticket. Monday through Saturday, street parking is paid until 6 p.m. Garages, light rail and the streetcar are better options for multi-hour appointments.
It's worth checking. Pioneer Square borders Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park, so Seahawks, Sounders and Mariners games bring heavy crowds, packed trains and event parking prices. If your appointment falls on a game day, arrive early by light rail or streetcar, or choose another date for a long session.
It's a free, self-guided gallery walk on the first Thursday of every month, when Pioneer Square's galleries stay open into the evening. The Alliance for Pioneer Square publishes the listings and offers free evening garage parking with a voucher. It's an easy, mostly indoor outing while a new tattoo heals.
