What is fine line?Updated October 18, 2026
Fine line tattooing uses very thin needle groupings, often a single needle or a tight round liner, to create delicate lines, soft shading and small detail. It suits botanicals, script and small symbols for people who want a subtle look, but thin lines soften and fade faster than bold work, so expect touch-ups.

About fine line tattoos
Fine line work grew out of the single-needle black and grey tattooing developed in Los Angeles in the 1970s and 1980s by artists such as Jack Rudy and Mark Mahoney. A later generation, led by artists like Dr. Woo, turned it into a style of its own: tiny, precise, mostly black-and-grey pieces that spread widely on social media in the 2010s.
Visually, fine line means crisp lines no thicker than a pencil stroke, little or no heavy outline, light grey shading or stippling, and plenty of open skin. It suits first-timers, people who want something easy to cover for work, and anyone drawn to florals, line drawings, small script or celestial motifs. Because the needle has to sit at a very consistent depth, choose an artist who specializes in it and look for healed photos, not just fresh ones.
Fine line gets an aging score of 2 out of 5. Thin lines hold less pigment, and ink particles spread slightly in the skin over the years, so fine detail blurs and lightens sooner than bold work. Sun speeds that up: the American Academy of Dermatology notes that UV light can fade some tattoo inks. Seattle's long gray season is kind to fine line, but July through September is not, so use SPF 30 or higher once the tattoo has healed. Sizing up slightly, leaving space between lines, and avoiding hands, fingers and feet all help a fine line piece last.

Fine Line tattoo FAQ
Do fine line tattoos fade faster?
Usually, yes. Thin lines carry less ink, and tattoo pigment spreads slightly in the skin over time, so fine line work tends to blur and lighten sooner than bold tattoos. Sun protection, a slightly larger size and an experienced fine line artist all extend its life. Many people book a touch-up after a few years.
Can you get a fine line tattoo on your finger or hand?
You can, but it's one of the worst placements for longevity. Skin on the hands and fingers sheds and flexes constantly and gets washed many times a day, so fine lines there can fade or blur unevenly within months. Many artists will warn you or decline, and touch-ups are common.
