Black and grey tattooing uses only black ink, diluted into a range of grey washes, to build smooth shading, depth and realism without color. It grew out of East Los Angeles's Chicano culture and California prisons in the 1970s and moved into studios by the late 1970s. It suits portraits, religious imagery, animals and script, and it ages well.

About black and grey tattoos
Black and grey has its roots in East Los Angeles's Chicano culture and in California prisons in the 1970s, where tattooers built homemade machines that ran a single needle, which made for finer lines. Charlie Cartwright opened a shop on Whittier Boulevard in 1975 that Ed Hardy renamed Good Time Charlie's Tattooland in 1977, and artists there, including Jack Rudy and Freddy Negrete, carried what Hardy named "black-and-gray realism" into studios worldwide.
The technique dilutes black ink with distilled water into several grey tones, then layers them into smooth gradients, sometimes with white highlights. Outlines are minimal or absent in realistic work. Black and grey suits portraits, religious and memorial pieces, animals, statues and lettering, and people who want a softer, timeless look than color offers.
Black and grey gets an aging score of 4 out of 5. Black pigment generally holds up better over time than many colored inks, and black and grey avoids the colors most often linked to allergic reactions. The lightest grey washes do soften over the years, so the best artists build strong contrast between darks and lights to keep the image readable long-term.

Black and Grey tattoo FAQ
Does black and grey last longer than color?
Generally, yes. Black pigment usually holds up better over time than colored inks, and black and grey avoids red and the other colors most often linked to allergic reactions. Light grey areas still soften over time, so strong contrast is what keeps a black and grey piece readable.
What's the difference between black and grey and blackwork?
Black and grey builds soft gradients from diluted grey washes, often for realistic or shaded imagery. Blackwork uses mostly solid, undiluted black for bold, graphic designs with high contrast. Both use only black ink, but the results look very different.
