Getting tattooed in Central District
The Central District, or CD, grew into the center of Seattle's African American community during the 20th century, and its notable residents have included Jimi Hendrix and Quincy Jones. The Northwest African American Museum occupies the former Colman School at 2300 South Massachusetts Street, and Jimi Hendrix Park, opened in 2017, sits beside it.
The area also takes in Leschi, Madrona and the Judkins Park area. A couple of tattoo studios sit along East Union Street, and Capitol Hill's Pike/Pine cluster is a short walk or bus ride northwest.
Judkins Park Station, in the I-90 median near 23rd Avenue South, opened March 28, 2026, on the 2 Line, with trains to downtown and across Lake Washington to Mercer Island, Bellevue and Redmond. The First Hill Streetcar stops at 14th Avenue and Washington Street, and the RapidRide G Line serves Madison Street. Near the new station, a restricted parking zone limits cars without a permit to two hours on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Elsewhere, street parking is mostly unmetered.
