Watercolor tattooing took off as artists such as Amanda Wachob began skipping the black outline entirely to imitate brush washes, drips and splatters in skin. Unbordered pieces soften over the years, so many artists now pair watercolor effects with a black line drawing or a black accent structure that holds the design together.

The look is soft, airy and expressive: translucent-looking color, edges that fade into skin, and abstract splashes framing a subject. **Do watercolor tattoos last?**
They last, but they don't stay crisp as long as bold styles. Soft color without outlines blurs and lightens faster, especially in the sun. Watercolor pieces anchored by black linework or saturated color hold up much better, and a touch-up after several years can refresh faded areas.

**Does watercolor work on darker skin tones?**
Pale, translucent washes show less on darker skin, so watercolor on deeper skin tones usually needs bolder, more saturated colors and often black structure. A good consultation will include an honest discussion of which colors will show and how they'll heal on your skin.
